Born in the Netherlands and raised in South Africa, Ghislaine Viñas is a New York-based designer that conveys her personal multicultural background to every project for the past 22 years. With a vibrant personality and curiosity to go to the unknown and step out of her comfort zone, the essence of Ghislaine’s irreverent style is all about turning the final result into a design that transmits playfulness, joy, and spontaneity whether it’s a product, residential or commercial project. The designer has been recognized in multiple top design publications and renowned design awards.
Her multicultural background is what made her into the irreverent and talented designer that she is today. She was born in the Netherlands but passed most part of her childhood in South Africa until she was 18 years old and nine months later, she decided to move to the United States to follow her studies in Philadelphia and later moved to a Tribeca apartment with her closest friends, and a new chapter began.
After moving to the Big Apple, the interior design emerged as a bombshell in Ghislaine’s life. “I sort of stumbled around for a bit and then ended up taking the wrong subway home, and coming out on the wrong subway stop, I saw a modular furniture store, and I went inside and it was like “here’s my resume, I wonder if you have any openings” She ended up working for 7 years for the company and had the opportunity to learn more about the world of furniture before the biggest opportunity of her career appeared in front of her when a good friend introduced her to a woman that was looking to open an office and they end up working together. The project was a big 10 000 square feet office space on 26th street and a “boots on the ground” training experience for the interior designer, and twenty-two years later, Ghislaine Viñas continues to work for this client in multiple types of projects.
Succeeding, in 1999, Ghislaine Viñas decided that it was time to go on her own and create what is today one of the most famous award-winning studios in New York. “It kind of made sense for me to start my own business, and that wasn’t scary. I think that I’m not scared of the unknown, and sometimes being naive it’s a good thing”. The studio remained with the same essence since the first day and it still functions as a laboratory for Ghislaine Viñas’s brand and creative endeavors. According to the Dutch-born interior designer, the hardest part of this process was to be an entrepreneur, a designer, a wife, and a mom all at once.

“I’m still just working from my gut and what I feel. I think the difference of what I was doing then in the beginning was I was looking at New York, what New York interior design was, and not finding that it had a place for me in it. Now it’s easier to just do what I want, and what I think is exciting. I want to stick out. I want to do my own thing; I want to be independent.” (Ghislaine Vínãs)
Ghislaine Viñas‘s instinctive intrigue for dramatic compositions and playful color contrasts are a lot different from the standard patterns of the design industry and this cheerful and irreverent vision, which some might even consider unusual, comes from her Dutch DNA since it’s considered a happy and opinionated nation. “I was always the Dutch girl in South Africa, you know? So, I think that’s kind of like not fitting in thing is where I’m comfortable and I like being an outsider”. Ghislaine considers being an outsider what makes her the professional she is today, thinking out of the box to cross the boundaries of creativity.
“The client gives me raw information and ingredients so that I can create something that I’ve never created before. Is like that show on TV where somebody gives you ten ingredients and everybody has to make a dish… I love that sort of reinterpretation of something that’s already there”. When asked about what she considers to be the project of her career, she said that she didn’t create that project yet, she mentioned the impact of the residential Skyhouse project where she had the opportunity to work with a top architect called David Hodgson, and a townhouse in Tribeca that had 16 000 square feet of interior space. But she believes that each design contributes to her growth as a professional and enriches her creative ideas, even the ones with more mistakes or challenges.
Challenging the creative vision of her clients with her different and revolutionary ideas is something that makes Ghislaine Viñas extremely proud, especially when later it is recognized with multiple awards and articles in top design publications. “I’m just thrilled that my work is now in Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Interior Design, but also in international publications, such as CovetED Magazine… It feels great, I’m very proud and very humbled by it.”
Ghislaine, who was considered to be one of Elle Decor’s A-Lister 2021, is working on an exciting new project where the goal is to incorporate the comfortable home-like feeling into a commercial space. “We’ve been working on a commercial project right now for a Google subsidiary, and we’re being pulled in to create that “Resimercial” to loosen up, to break out commercial projects.” A new concept that is surely challenging but enhances the importance of residential design has gained, especially after the worldwide pandemic. As for the future, Ghislaine Viñas still has a lot of dream projects to do subsequently that challenge her creativity and unique vision.
